These are clocks that knit. Clocks that knit. They knit 24 hours a day for 365 days and every year you get a new scarf to mark the passing of time.

But seriously: Clocks that knit.

Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, 1961.
Joan, a 19 year old Freedom Rider, was sentenced to two months in prison for her involvement in the integration of a Jackson, Mississippi bound train.  She served more than the required two months because each addition day reduced her $200 fine by $3.
In the Fall of 1961, Joan transferred from Duke University to historically black Tougaloo Southern Christian College because she felt integration should be a two way street.
Today Joan is a retired teaching assistant living in Virginia and mother to five sons.  After the 2008 election she brought her Obama pin to the grave of Medgar Evers.

I took a course in Civil Rights history a couple semesters ago. It was fascinating to learn from a professor who had actually met some of the activists as well as working in historically black colleges during the 60’s. The woman above is amazing.

This photography shows Annie Londonderry. She became one of the most celebrated women of the 1890s. Her amazing trip was reportedly set in motion by a wager that required Annie not only to circle the earth by bicycle in 15 months, but also to earn $5,000 en route as well. This was no mere test of a woman’s physical endurance and mental fortitude; it was a test of a woman’s ability to fend for herself in the world.

What a great idea for a lesson!

Tumblr, I Need Your Help

So, I have a history project where we’re given a trunk full of stuff and we have to look at it and create inferences/assumptions about the person who owned the stuff. We’re not given anything about the person except what’s in the box. So, I got a box with books with the name Henry Wulff inside, and a wedding picture, a German currency note, binoculars, an old Brownie camera, a pair of reading glasses, an exposure meter - probably for the camera, and the chain thing above. I have no idea what the chain is, and I tried looking it up, but got nothing. The books were dated from 1911 - 1917, and the binoculars are this greenish color that reminds me of army green.

So, if any of my followers could help me identify the chain above, or could reblog this so I can somehow find out, that would be fantastic.

Survival Under Atomic Attack

DON’T START RUMORS. In the confusion that follows a bombing, a single rumor might touch off a panic that could cost you your life.

This brochure was distributed by the California Office of Civil Defense during the Cold War. I’m kind of fascinated by things like this, especially because it was ultimately so futile… kind of chilling, right? Thanks for this, mom!

Through bombs and sirens, the Windmill Theatre carried on providing music, revue, and ballet performances for the people of wartime London. The artists sleep on mattresses in their dressing rooms, living and eating on the premises. Here, a scene behind the scenes shows one of the girls having a wash while the others sleep soundly surrounded by their picturesque costumes, after the show on September 24, 1940, in London.
